February 2023 Meeting Recap

The Bloomington Normal Modern Quilt  met via zoom on February 28, 2023 with 62 members present.   President Lisa B. called the meeting to order and reminded members that next months meeting will be a dual meeting with members able to attend in person or via zoom,

Prior to introducing the evenings speaker, Lisa asked the group “do you know what pojagi is”.  83% of those attending said No while only 17% said yes.  Lisa then introduced the speaker, Elizabeth DeCroos who gave a very informative program on pojagi.   She spoke of how she learned the Korean art when living there 14 years ago.  At the end of the  program, the majority of the members indicated they would like to try it themselves.

October meeting recap

Prior to the start of the meeting and during the break, members enjoyed delicious treats furnished tonight by Ary A., Sandra F., Karen G. and Sally H. 

Lisa B called the meeting to order. This is our last dual meeting until March. We will be meeting via Zoom only from November through February.

Noemi B. reported that we have 103 paid memberships.  Present at tonight’s meeting were 42 members and 13 members attending on zoom.  New member, Dee W., was introduced.

Previous members who have not renewed were contacted to see if they plan to rejoin.    The new password was sent to paid members on November 1st to allow access to our Members Only area of the website.

Lisa B. reported on the recent Quilt coat workshop with Erin Grogan from Love Sew Modern. Karen G. and Maria C. showed their beautiful completed coats, including a wonderful catwalk – we didn’t capture all of the pics for that, but what a fun time!

September 2019 Meeting Recap

Attendance:  42 members, 6 new members, and 4 guests

This month’s meeting began with an icebreaker for members and guests to encourage people to meet each other and learn more about BNMQG.   Icebreaker sheets were to be kept by people as a reference for people.  An extra 10 minutes was given as people were very involved.  The business meeting began at 6:10.  Nancy P. started the meeting with her vision for the guild: “to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through education, art, and community.”

Outgoing officers were recognized for their service and given a small token of appreciation for their dedication to the guild – Stormy H. and Kathy M. – co presidents in 2018-2019;  Cathie H. – vice president 2018-2019 who will now be the MQG guild liaison; and Teresa Arendell – secretary 2017 – 2019.

New officers were introduced:  Kathy Cook – vice president (not present), Betty Woodruff – treasurer, and Gale Imig – secretary (not present).

IMPORTANT September 2019 Meeting Reminder

Hi Modern Quilters,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 year of the Bloomington-Normal Modern Quilt Guild.  There are many activities, speakers, and fun planned for this year.  But before we close the book on 2018-2019, I want to take a minute to thank our Co-presidents Kathy Merrick and Stormy Helton and our Vice President Cathie Haab for their service for the past year and our Secretary Teresa Arendell for her service to the guild for the past two years.  Your leadership, time, and ideas are greatly appreciated and have strengthened our guild.  I am excited to welcome Kathy Cook as our Vice President, our Social Media chair – Betty Woodruff is moving into the Treasurer position, and Gale Imig is taking on the Secretarial duties.  As your president, I will work hard and do my best to bring fresh modern quilting ideas to BNMQG.

June 2018 Meeting Reminder

Hello Modern Quilters!

I’ve been waiting all year for this month’s meeting!  Come to Kelly’s Bakery at 6pm on Tuesday June 26 for a celebration of our first exhibit! We’ll view our beautiful minis and FabricRaffle6-18have treats from Kelly’s. There will be a short meeting but no program.

Everyone who has a quilt hanging will be entered into the drawing for the Culcita Box which has 12 Tula Pink fat quarters!

We’ll have a special fabric raffle with 6 half yards of Cotton and Steel and solid fabric! That’s 3 yards of fabric, quilters!

Registration for the July workshop with Lynn Carson Harris will continue this month.

Nancy Powell will be presenting the next set of directions for the BNMQG Mystery Quilt that she has designed.  There’s plenty of time to join in!

2018 Heart of IL Fair

WHAT DO YOU COLLECT ?       WHAT DO YOU CREATE ?

Enter your collections, creative crafts & textile creations in the 2018 Heart of Illinois Fair in Peoria.    Exhibits are in an air-conditioned, secure building.

Fair dates are Tuesday July 17th – Saturday July 21st.

Go to   www.heartofillinoisfair.com   The Home Page will appear.  On the left side click on FAIR BOOK RULES & ENTRY.  Scroll down the list—TEXTILES is Department 12 & Hobbies is Department 16.    You pay one exhibitor’s fee and can enter as many items as you like in Hobbies & Textiles, as well as all other Departments at the Fair.

In addition to the premiums paid for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place, Textiles and Hobbies have extra prizes and awards.    PEDDLER’S WAY QUILT COMPANY in Washington donates 9 gift cards in various amounts to winners in QUILTS and MACHINE EMBROIDERY.   Other prizes are listed on the website.

I am the Superintendent of Textiles & Hobbies.    I will be at the June 27th Modern Guild meeting.  You can bring me your entries and I will bring them to my pet-free & smoke-free home and deliver them to the fair building on Sunday July 15.   I can pick them up for you on Sunday July 22nd and return them to you at our Friday July 27th meeting.   Or you can deliver them yourself during the times listed in the RULES section on the website.

Any resident of the state of Illinois is eligible to enter.    If you have any questions, please call or email me, Viv B. – contact info on the Members list.

Our guild is full of amazing talent.    This is a wonderful opportunity for many of you since McLean County only has a 4H Fair.    Our premiums in Textiles are one of the highest in Illinois.   $25 for 1st place, $15 for 2nd, $10 for 3rd.   In addition to the other awards.   The Quilts section also has a Viewer’s Choice award.

How’s this for good timing… we can finish our mini quilts for BNMQG  and submit them for the #ModernMiniQuiltChallenge since they fit the criteria for it too.

This is extra incentive to finish your quilt – their deadline is the same as ours – Tuesday, May 22nd (even though their stuff says Tuesday the 23rd – Tuesday is the  22nd).

April 2018 Meeting Reminder

April is all about binding.  This is the last installment of our modern mini challenge education series and we’ll be exploring different techniques for binding and facing a quilt.  Your minis are due at the May meeting.

I love a good mystery, don’t you? Nancy Powell will be presenting the first set of directions for the BNMQG Mystery Quilt that she has designed.  This is always fun and I hope you’ll join in!

March 2017 Meeting Reminder

Hello Modern Quilters,

Get those creative juices flowing! March means Heartbeat Quilt design night.  Members have been working at sew days to make blocks and on Tuesday we will be designing quilts with them.  It’s a fun night to practice your modern design skills and to have fun with your quilting friends!

We’ll also continue our discussion about the modern mini challenge. This month the topic is quilting tips. If you haven’t had a chance you can still sign up!

Member signup for the fall retreat begins this month.  There are 25 spots available.  Details at the meeting or on the blog in the recap.

Also, don’t forget to sign up for the April 21 workshop!
