September 2019 Meeting Recap

Attendance:  42 members, 6 new members, and 4 guests

This month’s meeting began with an icebreaker for members and guests to encourage people to meet each other and learn more about BNMQG.   Icebreaker sheets were to be kept by people as a reference for people.  An extra 10 minutes was given as people were very involved.  The business meeting began at 6:10.  Nancy P. started the meeting with her vision for the guild: “to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through education, art, and community.”

Outgoing officers were recognized for their service and given a small token of appreciation for their dedication to the guild – Stormy H. and Kathy M. – co presidents in 2018-2019;  Cathie H. – vice president 2018-2019 who will now be the MQG guild liaison; and Teresa Arendell – secretary 2017 – 2019.

New officers were introduced:  Kathy Cook – vice president (not present), Betty Woodruff – treasurer, and Gale Imig – secretary (not present).

Hostesses for the meeting – Kathy S., Anne Unes, and Lori LeVar were thanked.

Cathie H. highlighted an upcoming webinar – Approaches to Improv by Maritza Soto on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm CST.  Members can register to view this live here or can choose to watch the recording on the MQG website after the event.  Cathie also reminded members that if they want their free ticket to QuiltCon 2020 in Austin, that it must be requested before November 30, 2019.  To register click here.

Committee reports

MEMBERSHIP  – Susan C. reminded members to renew their membership by the October guild meeting to retain their membership benefits.  Make sure to get your membership card from Susan.

PROGRAMS – Vickie A. encouraged members to turn in the program survey for input into this year’s programs.  October meeting:  Modern Mythbusters, November meeting:  Laura Hartrick’s trunk show (from the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild, and asked members to mark their calendars for the May 15 trunk show and May 16 for a workshop because those dates are not our usual dates.  Danna B.  reminded members to turn in their program surveys, their volunteer surveys, and show her a completed icebreaker for entries for this month’s door prize.  Door prize was awarded to Lori L.

RETREAT – Kathy M. mentioned that there were a few spots for the upcoming retreat at Camp Cilca in Cantrell, IL (North of Springfield) October 11-14.  She mentioned that the camp facility has new refrigerators and dishwasher.  She asked for people to check the food sign-up and volunteers to bring bed risers, ironing boards, and irons.  Please contact Kathy at (217-433-0327 or kwiltz4fun@gmail.com) if you can help with any of these items.

BNMQG Shirts – Ann Unes/Lori Levar had samples of the shirts and encouraged people to sign up for a shirt.  Shirts will be delivered at the October meeting.

HOSPITALITY – Barb Stevens and Mary Rose Hill announced there were still spots available to sign up to bring treats to our meetings but they may have been filled at this meeting.

SOCIAL MEDIA – Nancy P. announced a new group for members on Facebook  (BNMQG) https://www.facebook.com/groups/BNMQG/ – The group allows members to chat about and share modern quilt ideas, files that include important info – newsletters, info for workshops, membership renewal forms, etc.

QuiltCon Charity quilt – Thank you Card from the Alzheimer’s Association was read by Betty W. and an update on this year’s quilt was given by Cindy Reynolds.  The charity for this year’s quilt will be the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)

HEARTBEAT QUILTS – Pat S. reported that she is finalizing block designs and will be using the leftover fabric from last year’s quilts.  25 quilts were delivered to Advocate BroMenn.  Sewing days will be scheduled soon.

LIBRARY – Carol B. showed new books that have been added to the library and explained the process for checking out books from the library.

BLOCK LOTTO – Cindy R, explained what block lotto is, how it works, and demonstrated the new block for October.  Winners were Barb S. and MaryRose H. for the August blocks and Pat S. for the September blocks.

CRAFT SALE to benefit the church we meet in will be November 1-2.  Be thinking of things you could make to donate to their craft sale as a way to thank them for allowing us to use their amazing facility every month!  Items will be accepted tonight and at our October meeting.  So start crafting!

TIP of the MonthTOM-WaterSolublePen 09_2019 – Don’t iron on it or it will be permanent.  To make sure that the markings will completely disappear, spray them with a solution of 1 cup of cold water with a heaping teaspoon of backing soda.  The baking soda will change the ph of the ink and it will not reappear.
