February 2023 Meeting Recap

Submitted by Barb S., Secretary

The Bloomington Normal Modern Quilt  met via zoom on February 28, 2023 with 62 members present.   President Lisa B. called the meeting to order and reminded members that next months meeting will be a dual meeting with members able to attend in person or via zoom,

Prior to introducing the evenings speaker, Lisa asked the group “do you know what pojagi is”.  83% of those attending said No while only 17% said yes.  Lisa then introduced the speaker, Elizabeth DeCroos who gave a very informative program on pojagi.   She spoke of how she learned the Korean art when living there 14 years ago.  At the end of the  program, the majority of the members indicated they would like to try it themselves.

The regular business meeting began following the program.  Lisa reminded those who participated on the Caroline Oneto workshop to post their pictures in March Show and Tell. The workshop was relaxed, informative and productive. Most members completed their project during the workshop.

Noemi reported that we currently have 116 members.

Those from the guild who attended Quilt Con last week in Atlanta all agreed it was an amazing event. The quilts, the lectures, the workshops and all of the vendors were so inspiring. If you have not attended QuiltCon previously, this is truly an amazing event and you should consider making plans for QuiltCon 2024 in Raleigh, NC February 22-25, 2024.

Valerie and Nancy had given each member 10 pins with the guild logo on it.  Nine of these pins were to be given to various attendees at the show.   Everyone agreed that the recipients were thrilled and will probably see more pins being gifted next year.

Just a few highlights are listed below, but more pictures are in the shutterfly share site that is linked from our Member’s page.

BNMQG had 3 members with quilts hanging at the show! Leslie S., Kathy C. (with 2!) and Nancy P. all had quilts hanging at QuiltCon 2023.

The highlight of the Quilt Con for our group was, however, our very own Nancy Powell receiving second place in the “Small Quilts” category.

Our members that were available met at our Community Outreach Quilt for a picture.

Marge E. presented a copy of the mission statement she and Barb S. have drafted.

Our mission is to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through Art, Education, and Community. The Bloomington-Normal Modern Quilt Guild fulfills its mission through active membership participation in charitable activities, member education, monthly member meetings, both in person and virtual, and volunteer opportunities. No type of quilts will be excluded and will include modern, traditional, and art quilts.

Members were instructed if they have any comments or suggestions to contact Marge or Barb and those comments will be presented to the Board.  It was noted that the mission statement does not require a change in the by-laws.

Lisa asked for volunteers to serve on the Nominating Committee.   Offices to be filled this year are President, Vice Present and Treasurer.   Please contact a Board member to become part of the Nominating Committee. This is a great way to be involved in the future of our guild.

Anyone interested in a position on the board, please contact the current board member to ask any questions. Duties and responsibilities for all positions are located on the Member’s page. The slate of officers will be announced in June.

The rules for the Kona Mini Challenge were reviewed and members were reminded to post a picture of their completed quilt on the guild share site by March 15.  Please bring completed quilts to the March meeting for show and tell. Those quilts selected for display at the Decatur Art Show should be brought to the April meeting.

Our guild will again have our Modern Showcase at the HAAQG show on April 28 and 29.  We need volunteers to man our display.   Sign up is available at sign up genius.   Those working will be given free admission to the show.

We also need your quilts for our Modern Showcase – we will be accepting our Kona Challenge quilts from both this year and last year. Modern Mystery quilts may also be used. Upload your quilt pictures to our Shutterfly Share site BNMQG Modern Quilts. Quilts will be collected at the April meeting.

Following a short break Nancy P. reviewed guidelines for the Decatur Art Show in August. Upload your quilt pictures to our Shutterfly Share site BNMQG Modern Quilts.

All of the Modern Mystery Quilts have now been turned in and Nancy showed a picture of them so members could vote on their favorite.  The viewers choice quilt was done by Jean Blythe.   The drawing for the cash prize for those completing a top was won by Vickie Alsene.  The prize was $340.00.   Members thanked Nancy P for everything she did to help us with improv.   It was the consensus of the group that everyone would  like to do another mystery quilt. Please bring your completed Modern Mystery to the March meeting for show and tell.

Pat S. reported on the progress of the community outreach committee.  So far 39 quilts have been presented to the Cancer Center.   Anyone having blocks or quilts out should let Pat know.

Normal Public Library in conjunction with Bloomington Public Library is hosting an event on March 18th – “Pins and Needles: A Fiber Arts Celebration” from 2-4 pm. We will be having a demonstration of improv quilting. Pat S., Linda L. and Betty W. have volunteered to do this event. We realize it is the same day as our Sew Day, so maybe sew at the sew day in the morning and stop by the library before the event is over.

March 18th is the National Quilting Day. To celebrate, please hang a quilt outside your home. BNMQG is also hosting an in person sew day at the church. Zoom will also be available.

Plans are underway to raffle off the Community Outreach quilt.  Details will be provided later on this.

The March program will be Sara Ruiz “100 Days of Quilting”. Mystery quilts and Kona Challenge quilts will be shown at the meeting.

The April meeting will be our destash sale so members should have their donations marked in whole dollar amounts.   Those members wanting to participate, please sign up on the Destash Sign Up Genius. All items are a donation to BNMQG and the proceeds of the sale of items will be used towards speakers and events.

Show and tell followed and the meeting was adjourned at 8:30.
