September 2017 Meeting Recap

Submitted by Teresa A., Secretary

Happy 5th Birthday to us!  We celebrated our fifth year of being together as the B-N Modern Quilt   Guild.  There were even cupcakes and punch to celebrate the occasion provided by our Hospitality Committee chair, Paula M. and Betty D. As we left for the evening, we were given a fat quarter “cupcake” in honor of the guild’s 5th birthday.

Kathy thanked everyone for attending our sew days, field trips, taking Heart Beat kits, and bringing refreshments.  The more we all participate in our guild, the stronger our guild becomes!

At this month’s meeting we had 41 members, 7 guests and 5 new members!  Welcome to our new members, Heather B., Connie F., Marsha H., Sharon O., and Leslie S.  We look forward to getting to know you and are so happy to have you join our BNMQG.

Kathy presented an appreciation gift to Ann U., outgoing secretary and Ann G. outgoing treasurer.  Thank you both for sharing your talents and commitments to the guild. We wish Ann G. the best with her new adventures in California. Please come back to visit us sometime soon!

Ice Dyeing at September Meeting

Submitted by Vickie A.
Modern quilters,
There are 15 who have signed up for the ice dyeing, which is the day of our September meeting-Sept 26.  come early to the church lawn between 4 and 5 pm to prepare your bucket of fabrics, dyes, and ice.
If you have PFD fabrics for dyeing fine, but don’t buy some just for this project.  I use regular cotton fabrics, printed fabrics, shirts, vintage linens, etc.  Anything mostly cotton or linen will dye.  If it is a blend, it will be paler than all cotton. you can easily do 12 fat quarters worth, and can do more than one bucket, just make sure the bucket (or kitty litter bucket) doesn’t leak.  We don’t want dye all over your car!!  And bring an old large shirt, apron or coverup just in case. probably the large bag of ice (or lots of ice cubes!) should be in a cooler until needed, unless you are quick or it isn’t a hot day.
The original instruction list is here with more details.
It is not too late or too many to join us that day.  Just let me know so I can have enough masks for everyone.  If you have your own dust mask, you can bring it.  And I will bring samples of quilts made with these fabrics to the meeting.
Vickie

Meeting Recap, August 22, 2017

Another fun B-N Modern Quilt Guild meeting! We started off with announcements;  firstly, with Kathy thanking our refreshment providers – this time LeeAnne Fritz.  LeeAnne has led the Hospitality Committee this year and will be turning it over to Paula Meinert in September.  The snacks encourage us to come early and socialize, which is one thing we all seem to enjoy!  Please see Paula to help out!  Second, Kathy reminded members to cast their ballots for the new slate of officers. More information on that below.

Donna Lee reminded us about the Modern Maker Vendor Fair that is coming up at the September meeting.  If you long-arm quilt, make labels, bind or offer any other service or items that would be of interest to modern quilters, you can set up a small display or sell.  Each vendor will be allowed a half table of space, so you can show off your stuff! Let Donna know if you’re planning on setting up – that way we can have enough tables set aside.

Car Pooling is available to those wanting to go to the Gems quilt show in Peoria – See Betty about that.

June 2017 Meeting Recap

June Meeting Recap

Submitted by Anne U., Secretary

June’s meeting was held at the Methodist Church  in downtown Bloomington.  Five guests from Champaign and 40 members were present.  Kathy Cook welcomed everyone and thanked  Celeste, Nancy, Carol and Lisa for the picnic-themed refreshments.  Hospitality Chair Lee Anne Fritz asked for volunteers to bring refreshments for future meetings.  Contact her if you are willing to help.

Kathy then introduced our presenter, Patty Young, author, fabric designer for Riley Blake, and owner of ModKids. Patty talked about the trends she saw at this year’s spring quilt market, a trade show open to shop owners for all things quilt-related.  The trends she noted this year were rainbow and animals.  She showed pictures from market that showed these trends, and shared pics of several of her new fabric lines for Riley Blake.  Attendees also had a chance to shop her patterns and some fabrics she brought.  It was a great program- Thanks, Patty!
