September 2023 Meeting Recap

Submitted by Barb S., Secretary

BNMQG met September 26, 2023 at Christ Lutheran Church.  Prior to the meeting, a social time was enjoyed with delicious treats provided by Leslie S., Donna P., Sandy F., and Cheryl A.

President Vivian H. asked Lisa B. to introduce Aimee Beam of the Midwest Food Bank for a special presentation.  Aimee gave a brief explanation of the history and scope of the  Midwest Food Bank.  She noted that 99.4% of the donated money goes to provide food for those in need.   It is through the generosity of volunteers that come forward and assist with so many aspects of the association.

For the past several months, members of the Guild have been selling raffle tickets for a quilt designed and sewn by members of the Guild.  Lisa B. then presented the Midwest Food Bank a check in the amount of $3175.00 which represents the sale of raffle tickets.  Incidentally, at the drawing last moth, one of our members, Donna Phillips, was the winner of the quilt.

Members were reminded by Noemi that dues must be paid no later than October 31 in order to continue to receive the password for the websites.  She reported to date 101 members have paid their dues.  Tonight there were 54 attending in person, 15 attending via zoom and 3 guests present. A membership form must be completed and turned in (via mail, email to bnmqgmembership @ gmail.com, or brought to a meeting).

The fabric raffle was won by Barb S.

The drawing for the survey question which related to the Modern Quilt Guild website was won by Sally H.

The program for the meeting was based on educating members on the use of the Modern Quilt Guild Block Study Resources.  Vivian told the members how to find and access the site.  Several members had already made blocks from the site and they were shown and explained.

The blocks were:

  • Marion T.           Geese Gone Wild
  • Rhonda D.          Puzzle Patch
  • Barb S.           Parameters
  • Linda L.         Robbing Pete
  • Vivian H.       Punch Block
  • Sheila R.           Punch Block

Linda L. then explained that members are asked to make a block (or more) each month using the Modern Quilt Guild Block Study Resource Guide.  Once the member has enough blocks to make a quilt they may donate the finished quilt to the Cancer Center if they wish to do so.  Finished quilts should measure 60×70 and can be given to Pat S. who will see that they are delivered.   Members are under no obligation to donate their quilts, however.     The purpose is to learn to use the resources of the Modern Guild.

Pat S., chairman of Community Outreach, noted that we donated 66 quilts to the Cancer Care Center.   This year’s Community Outreach project will again be the Heartbeat Quilts for the Carle BroMenn NICU.  The Guild will furnish the fabric and batting in the anniversary fabric colors for the quilts.  Anyone having fabric in those colors they wish to donate, may give it to Pat.   As in past years, the goal will be 30 quilts.

Sew dates have been scheduled for October 17 and November 16 to work on the quilts.  Sign up here! Location is Christ Lutheran Church, from 9am to 3pm. Members will be given kits for the quilts after the first of the year.

Nancy P. reviewed the scheduled programs for the coming year.  She noted there will be no meeting in December.   The April meeting will be moved to the 3rd Tuesday in April because of members wishing to go to the show in Paducah.

The January workshop will be presented by David Owen Hastings.   Sign up will begin at the break tonight.

Following a short break, several members showed projects they had completed.

Following Show and Tell, the meeting was adjourned.
