February Meeting Recap

Submitted by Barb S., Secretary

Sixty two members of the BNMQG met virtually on February 27, 2024.  President Viv H called the meeting to order.  She then reviewed some of the necessary paths for navigating the zoom.

Nancy P introduced the 5 members of our guild who had their quilts accepted at the recent QuiltCon.    Those members gave a short review of their quilt.

Teresa Arendell  stated she is always on the lookout for quilt designs whenever she travels.  This particular design she spotted at the airport in Dallas.  It was the pattern used in the carpeting.  She used navy for her background fabric.   She used very narrow strips of red and blue.  The quilting was done at ½” intervals using a heavier weight Aurifil thread. She also used a jean needle.   For more emphasis she chose to add additional lines running from top to bottom at an angle. Her quilt was named “Lines of Travel”

Kathy Cook’s  quilt was “More Than Most.  At last year’s Quilt Con, the first and second place quilts in the modern traditionalism caught her eye.  She knew she wanted to try it.  Her quilt  measures 46×50.   She chose a rail fence block and decided to try it in colors she never uses.  The lighter colored blocks were appliqued on and the quilt was assembled on point.

Karla Miley called her quilt “Linearity: Points and Counterparts”.   It is the 23rd in her Slasher Series.  The quilt consists of triangles placed in the negative space.  It is quilted close together.

Dawn Polomski named her quilt appropriately “Pink House”.   In 2023 she had submitted this quilt but it was rejected.   She submitted it again this year in the Piecing Category.  She used EQ8.  The side blocks of the quilt are paper pieced.  She noted that the most difficult part of the assembly was the navy triangles.  Incidentally, Dawn noted that she grew up in a pink house so making this house in pink was appropriate.

Judy Levine was unable to attend but did send a note about her quilt called “Boing”.    In sorting her fabric this was placed in the “too ugly to use” pile.   Fortunately, she changed her mind. It is a gradient fabric going from purple to gold.   The quilt was designed using Illustrator software.    Some of the stripes had to be pieced to get them long enough.  It is channel quilted at ¼ inch intervals.

Following a short break the business meeting resumed.

Linda thanked Carol F. for her recent class on understanding and using EQ8. She announced that a tech corner will soon be added to the website.

Community Outreach Chairman Pat S. reported that the guild has been asked to have a table at the upcoming grand opening of the Hudson Sewing Studio.  The purpose of this will be to show customers what our guild is all about and answer any questions the customers may have.   The dates are March 22,23, and 24.   Member are asked to sign up through this Sign Up Genius link – it is also on the Member’s page.

Carol Lou announced that her guild is sponsoring an online class on March 9th with Quilt Maven Dave doing the “Storm at Sea” quilt.  There are still openings and anyone wishing to attend can sign up through Quiltmavendave.com.

Jamie W was unable to attend but messaged that her book review will be published in the newsletter,

Sheila R reported that her block studies quilt has been finished and is at the longarmer.  She will be able to show it in the near future.

Several members participated in show and tell:

  • Jean B showed her quilt from the South Florida guild she completed.
  • Teresa A. showed how she recently mended her favorite jeans using big stitch quilting.
  • Viv showed the quilt she is working on from the recent David Owen Hastings class.   She did note that it already has a label on it. She also showed several pictures of the quilts at QuiltCon.

The next meeting will be March 26 and will be a dual meeting (in person and virtual).  The speaker will be Allie McCathren of The Exhausted Octopus.  Her topic will be Painting with Scraps. Guest tickets are available on our Events and Workshop Tickets page.

It was noted that the April meeting will be April 16 and the destash sale will be held at that time. Please sign up for space at this Sign Up Genius link.
