Hello Modern Quilters,
As if joining the National Quilt Guild wasn’t exciting enough, one of our members was the 10,000th member! Vickie A is the lucky member!
The MQG has showered her with all kinds of great prizes including a new Janome sewing machine.
Vickie is our January 2016 Member Spotlight quilter.

Describe your experience being the 10,000th member of the Modern Quilt Guild!
At first I thought it was a scam, and quickly forwarded it to Betty Woodward who assured me it was real. WOW! As of December 31, I have only received CreativeBug.com subscription, but delivery is difficult during the holidays, so January should be really exciting.
The funniest thing is that I almost bought this very Janome machine during Paducah! It was meant to be…
And I intend to “share the wealth” of the wonderful things sent to me from the modern guild.

1 Tell us a little about yourself.
I retired from teaching family & consumer science at Ottawa High School after 42 great years. Most of those years involved teaching sewing and quilting to both high school students and adults, but I burned out and dropped out of the quilting world. But I missed the people and creativity of quilting and rejoined three years ago, and what a difference those few years had made in the quilting community! jelly rolls, layer cakes, modern quilting, and long arm quilting explosion were
new to explore. Thank you, modern guild, for being such a supportive and interesting group!
2 Who or what inspires you?
Color inspires me. And I love to dabble in new techniques and ideas. I will try anything once!
3 What is your favorite quilt and why?
Probably what I am currently working on. I think about the design process and ideas constantly so a notebook and pen are with me all the time so great ideas don’t disappear!
4 Any other passions besides quilting?
My husband says I’m happiest making a huge mess! I guess that is why I have been fabric dyeing for over 30 years, and still explore new ideas/techniques for fabric. That has also expanded into fabric painting with inks, paintsticks, and other coloring methods during cold weather, but snow/ice dyeing is also fun! My personal goal is to incorporate my dyed fabrics in every quilt I make.
5 What modern fabric or designers are you crazy about at the moment?
LOVE Frond fabrics! In fact we are sponsoring the first ever nationwide Frond design challenge at our quilt show in Ottawa on July 16 and 17. Anyone can enter and they will be on display. If you aren’t familiar with them, check out their website. We will be sending out information and entry forms on the internet to guilds, quilters, and on-line quilting groups.
Also, love Jacquie Gering and her approach to modern quilting.
And thank you, Donna L, for letting me take your place at Angela Walter’s workshop! They are all inspiring.
