January 2022 Meeting Recap

Submitted by Paula M., Secretary

The January meeting was called to order by president, Lisa B at 6 PM.  The meeting was held via Zoom, with 62 of 95 members present.  We will have at least 1 more Zoom meeting: February.  We will decide about March at a later date.

Our presenter was Cindy Grisdela with a program that focused on the Anatomy of an Improv Quilt.  Cindy discussed her process and how sometimes projects need to be on the design wall for awhile to figure out what they really need to be. She also said it is ok to take things apart and re-use them. Her talk included many pictures of her award winning quilts. Her workshop on Saturday was on Curves and Stripes. It was a sold out class and we had lots of fun.

The Community Outreach’s report was provided by Rita G.  There are 8 members on this committee and they are looking for more members to help.  They are hoping to put together a small trunk show to get the word out to the community about the guild’s very worthwhile programs.  The heart beat quilts will be the highlight of the April meeting.

Block Lotto was explained by Leslie S. and Marilyn B.  Next month’s block is titled Ribbon Rock.  It will have a light gray background with strong orange for the center and corners.  Follow the link from our Block Lotto page – you will need to log in to your personal Modern Quilt Guild account – this is separate from the Member’s only password on this website. Please make Block A, do not make block B.

January, February and March Block Lotto blocks will be brought to the March meeting and drawings for each month’s blocks will be held. You have lots of time to get blocks for each month completed. Hopefully, we will have lots of blocks for each month, so that we can have multiple winners.

Tickets are still available for the 2 Yazzii bags.  Please use the links on the member’s page to purchase raffle tickets via PayPal or if you prefer to use cash, please see Lisa, Anita or Betty.  The winners will be drawn at the February meeting.

Nancy reported on the Mystery Quilt Challenge. Our first challenge was to create improv stripes. It was so fun to see everyone’s palettes come alive in their stripes.

This month’s raffle winner was Rhonda D., and she won Cindy Grisdela’s newest book Adventures in Improv Quilts as her prize.  The next challenge clue will be presented February 7 with 2 Zooms: at 11 am and 7 pm.

We had Show and Tell.

Next month Betty W. will be showing us examples of Quilting Modern.  We look forward to viewing her lovely quilts.

In March, Christina De Miranda will be presenting her lecture on My Journey Thru Modern Quilting.

Stay safe with this winter storm that is coming – maybe you can get some extra sewing time!
