The Bloomington-Normal Modern Quilt Guilt met on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Christ Lutheran Church. Thirty-eight (38) members were in attendance, and we welcomed a new member, Tresa G. President Kathy C. thanked the members who provided this month’s treats, Carrie O. and Becky B. who provided us with lots of delicious snacks.
While everyone was enjoying socializing prior to the beginning of our meeting, we were able to enjoy pictures of some of the quilts from this year’s Quilt Con. Ann G our member from CA provided the pictures. Thanks Ann G.
Announcements:
Kathy C. thanked Becky from Boline’s for hosting the guild to work on the Heartbeat quilt blocks at our March Sew Day.
Julie D. one of our nominating committee member, announced the other two members of the committee, Carol Lou E. and Paula M. If you would like to be a part of the board for our guild, please contact any of these three ladies to let them know. All the board positions are available to run for this year. At this time, we have one person for each for treasurer and secretary. So please give this some serious consideration to become more involved in our guild. As Julie said, we are a community and will be there to help and support our board officers. You can find Julie D., Carol Lou E. and Paula M, email addresses in the members’ only section.
On-going sign up for our Spring Workshop Day – April 21st at the church. We have two projects this time – Donna L. will be leading us in making a work in progress bag and Nancy P. will be leading us in making notebook covers. The cost is $40 for the workshop and a $5 option for lunch if you’d like to have it provided for you.
Our Fall Retreat sign up went so well we have filled all 25 spots!!! We will begin a waiting list so if you are interested, please email Betty W. to get your name on the list in case someone cancels.
The Chicago International Quilt Festival for April 12th has donated some free tickets for us. Betty W. will email when we receive the tickets. The tickets will be distributed on a first come basis. Viv B. shared if you have signed up to go on the bus with the GEMS group, they will reimburse the ticket price if you get free tickets.
Mystery Quilt Kickoff will be presented by Nancy P. next month. Nancy said you will receive a supply list and instruction in April. She also hinted to “keep scraps handy.”
It’s a mystery!!!
Block Lotto for this month is the Modern Quilt Guild January Block of the Month. You can access the information on the MQG/community/resources. You have member access to this through your dues to our guild membership.
Kona Color of the Year Mini Quilt Challenge
If you are participating in our Kona Color of the Year Mini Quilt Challenge, there are entry forms available. Mini Quilt Challenge Entry Form
Tonight Donna L. shared some tips and ideas of how to get ideas of designs to quilt our mini quilts.
She showed us ways to “audition” some different stitching designs by using a dry erase marker on a sheet protector using a picture of the quilt and using a piece of vinyl over the quilt top. Donna also suggested looking at books with pictures and quilting designs. One book she mentioned was Modern Minimal 20 Bold & Graphic Quilts by Alissa Haight Carlton. There was some discussion of different marking tools to use as well as tapes. Next month we will be having stations to go over facings and bindings.
And remember it’s not too late to sign up and participate in our challenge! The deadline for the mini quilt is our May 22nd meeting.
We had many beautiful quilts and snow dyed fabrics for Show and Tell tonight.
During the break time tonight, people had a chance to take a closer look at the show and tell items, sign up for the April workshop, and the retreat.
After break we had our Fabric Raffle drawing. The lucky winner tonight was Nancy H.
Our survey question tonight was “Who quilts your quilts?” The choices and results were:
- A Long armer – 16
- I do – 13
- It depends – 5
- My cat – 0
The majority of us send our quilts to a longarmer quilter but there are still quite a few of us who do our own quilting.
Congratulations to the winner of the door prize – Danna B.
Block Lotto Winners were Carol B., Leslie S., and Nancy P. Congratulations!!
The program this month was to help design the Heartbeat Quilts. We worked in groups of 2- 4 people designing the quilt tops to be donated to the hospital. If you are interested in helping with piecing a top, quilting, or making a complete quilt, please contact Cindy R.
Things to remember
– Fall Retreat – October 5 – 8th. At this time we are full, but will be starting a waiting list. We will be at the same place as last year in Sherman, IL.
– Guild Library. The Guild has ten (10) books which can be checked out by members. This is an awesome resource and all it requires is a $5 deposit at the time of checking out the book and it will be refunded if the book is brought back the following meeting. If not returned the month after borrowing, the deposit will be retained in the library account. See Carol B., who is the guild librarian if you would like to check out a book.
Our next meeting will be April 24thth at the church. See you then!
