Meeting Recap May 2017
Submitted by Ann U., Secretary
Members and visitors all had a lot to enjoy at the last meeting! It was a busy, fun and creative one.
Before the meeting even started, everyone had a chance to shop at the De-Stash Sale that took up 6 tables! There were lots of books, fabric, notions and UFO’s to buy. All proceeds go to our guild.
The meeting started with President Kathy Cook thanking our refreshment volunteers – Paula and Betty- for the delicious treats. She also announced that next month’s (June) meeting will be in a different location due to the church’s vacation Bible school using all the facility. Watch your email and check the blog for important details!!
Also, save the date of September 23rd for a meet-up with the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb for a Human Rights Quilt Exhibit. There will be quilts on display from around the world, and we will also get a behind-the-scenes tour of NIU’s private textile collection.
Betty Woodruff reported for Ann G that there were 32 members and 3 visitors present at the meeting.
The workshop, “Poolside Tote,” to be taught by Donna Lee on Saturday, June 10th, has 18 people signed up. Member Beth Findley has some Bonsal stabilizer available for sale for the tote- contact her if you would like some for the workshop. Lunch arrangements are being made by LeeAnne Fritz.
Donna also reminded members that sign-ups are ongoing for the yearly BNMQG retreat to be held October 6-8 or 9 at Camp Cilca. Be sure to sign up by August 22 to get a “swag bag” full of goodies! Eighteen have already signed up! Last date to sign up is October 1st. See Donna Lee for more info.
Mystery Quilt designer Sue Kaiser gave the second set of directions for the Mystery Quilt. You should have your fabric selected and cut per last month’s instructions. This month, we will be making 8-in-one Half Square Triangles out of the 10 x 10 inch squares. Specifics are posted on the members-only part of the BNMQG blog. It’s still easy to catch up on this mystery! It ends in July.
Our door prize winner this month was Pat Messinger. The survey questions was who would members to send Postcards to? Results were to friends, both quilty and not-quilty, and also to relatives.
There were 40 blocks turned in for Block Lotto this month! The four winners were Marge Ehlers, Paula Meiner, Ann Groonwald and Pat Messinger. June’s block lotto is a Rectangle Slice block in the colors of the Modern Quilt Guild’s Quilt Con Challenge. Click here for specifics. It was suggested that the blocks be sliced in alternate directions if you make more than one.
The program on Postcard quilts was presented by Ann Unes, then all the members and visitors were encouraged to make them. A postcard quilt is simply a 4 x 6 quilt top, quilted with batting but no backing, them attached to a postcard with a zigzag stitch around the edges. There were 8 sewing machines, several irons and cutting stations set up, and supplies provided. Everyone was encouraged to make one for the guild to give to an area nursing home and one for themselves. It was fun and creative as fabric was selected and sewing machines stitched and zig zagged! Those who didn’t make one at the meeting took supplies home and will bring their finished postcard to the June meeting.
Show and Tell

See you then!
